Erasmus: the changing face of mobility

25 March 2010 - 15:00

Since its inception over 20 years ago, two million students have participated in Erasmus, the European Union's flagship exchange programme for students in higher education. Despite a creditable history of success, however, the appeal of mobility within the EU appears to be waning. This session addresses critical issues for the Erasmus programme, including the motivation of students to study abroad and the constraints facing those engaged in subjects requiring professional recognition, such as doctors, engineers and teachers, who have traditionally found it difficult to engage in mobility programmes. While focusing on the Erasmus programme, the issues highlighted in this session will also have wider relevance
to other mobility programmes. Presentations will examine how these issues might be addressed, using case studies and drawing on specific data that is not publicly available
