Colin Walters is Chief Executive Officer at Australian Education International (AEI). AEI is the international education arm of the Australian Government Department of Innovation, Industry, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIISRTE).
Mr Walters joined AEI in January 2009 from the Higher Education Group in the Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations. Mr Walters’ responsibilities in Higher Education Group included policy, core funding for universities, student loan programs and quality and accountability issues.
Mr Walters is a current Director of the Australian-American Fulbright Commission.
Mr Walters has held a number of senior appointments in Government including Group Manager of the Science Group and the Vocational Education and Training Group, Director of the National Centre for Vocational Education Research and as a member of the National Training Quality Council. Previously, Mr Walters was a member of the Senior Executive Service of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet where his responsibilities included the passage of the historic first Native Title Act in 1993.
Mr Walters spent much of his earlier career in the UK, including developing the Scientific and Technology Group for the UK Police Service as Assistant Under-Secretary of State, Home Office. He also served as Principal Private Secretary to four UK Cabinet Ministers.
