Hon. Mr S B Dissanayake
Mr S B Dissanayake, popularly known as 'S.B' obtained his degree in Civil Administration from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura in 1974. He started his political career at the early age of 25 and entered the Parliament in 1989. He played a key role in uniting the country’s communist parties and forming the United People’s Front. Mr Dissanayake led the 1994 election campaign which resulted in Mrs Chandrika Kumarathunga being elected as the President of Sri Lanka. Mr Dissanayake was appointed as the Minister of Samurdhi, Youth Affairs, Sports and Rural Development in 1994. Mr Dissanayake is well known for introducing Samurdhi, a National Poverty Eradication Program that is effectively operating to date. As the Minister of Sports, Mr Dissanayake took extensive measures to develop sports especially in the rural communities by providing sports facilities to the rural youth. As a result many rural youths received international fame and for the first time Sri Lanka won the Cricket World Cup in 1996. He joined hands with His Excellency President Mahinda Rajapaksa and helped him win the Presidential Election held in 2010. Mr Dissanayake was appointed as the Minister of Higher Education in 2010. He currently champions the vision of building Sri Lanka as an Education Hub in Asia.
